ABOUT THE MCC
The MCC is an exciting opportunity for artists of all levels to unleash their creativity and embark on a magical journey through the art of medallion painting and/or customization. This challenge invites both amateur and experienced painters and artists to transform the 2025 medallion into their own unique masterpiece. Participants are encouraged to push the boundaries of reality, explore endless possibilities, and express their artistic vision.
2025 MEDALLION: “CANTERBURY”
Regency equine art is a testament to the era’s deep admiration for horses, reflecting both their societal significance and their captivating beauty. This period, spanning from the late 18th to early 19th century, witnessed a remarkable surge in paintings and sculptures that celebrated the horse’s elegance and strength. Artists of the time, such as George Stubbs, were renowned for their meticulous attention to detail and their ability to capture the dynamic essence of horses. Their works often highlighted the intricate musculature and graceful movement of these animals, thus elevating equine art to new heights of realism and idealism with emotional depth.
Beyond mere depictions, these artworks also served as symbols of wealth and status, as owning and commissioning portraits of prized horses was a privilege of the affluent. Consequently, Regency equine art not only demonstrates technical mastery but also provides a window into the cultural and social values of the time.

DIVISIONS
The contest is divided into two distinct divisions, each offering unique opportunities for artistic expression.
Finishwork Division focuses on the purity of painting. Here, artists are challenged to bring medallions to life using only their painting skills. No sculpting, additions, props, or scene work are permitted, allowing the artist’s brush to be the sole tool of transformation. This division celebrates the finesse and precision of paintwork, where every stroke and hue must convey depth, emotion, and story without any physical alterations.
Customization Division offers a playground for creative liberation. Artists in this category are free to sculpt, add, or alter their medallions in any way that aligns with their artistic vision. This division encourages innovation and imagination, inviting participants to push boundaries and explore new dimensions. Whether it’s a subtle modification or a dramatic transformation, the customization division celebrates the ingenuity and craftsmanship of artists as they bring their individualized concepts to life, marrying technique with creativity in dazzling displays.
CATEGORIES
The challenge is thoughtfully divided into two distinct categories: Professional and Amateur, catering to participants with varying skill levels and experience.
The Professional category is designed for those who have honed their craft to a high degree, often through extensive experience and sell their work. These participants are expected to showcase a mastery of technique, creativity, and presentation, setting a high benchmark for excellence.
The Amateur category welcomes enthusiasts who are passionate about developing their skills but may not have the same level of experience or training. This division allows amateurs to compete in a more level playing field, where they can focus on growth and learning.
Honesty, as they say, is the best policy, and this principle is especially pertinent in the context of the contest. While there will be no stringent policing of skill levels, participants are encouraged to be truthful about their abilities when choosing their category. This not only ensures a fair competition but also fosters an environment of integrity and respect among all participants. By being honest, you not only uphold the spirit of the contest but also contribute to a more enriching and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
RULES
The challenge welcomes while entries from around the globe are however, participants must have a USPS shipping address to be eligible to receive a prize. This requirement ensures that any awards can be shipped directly to the winners via the United States Postal Service. It’s important for international contestants to arrange for a valid USPS address, perhaps through a friend, family member, or a mail forwarding service in the United States, to ensure they can claim their prize if selected. This stipulation is in place to streamline the logistics of prize distribution.
Submissions should include up to three photos of the completed medallion, sent via email to kylee@studiothornrose.com. It’s crucial to use the subject line “MCC 2025 Entry” to ensure your entry is easily found. Don’t forget to include your name, USPS shipping address, email address, and the Category & Division in which you’re competing.
A work submitted must be solely created by the individual artist entering the competition and that they must only use the 2025 Medallion as its canvas. This ensures the authenticity and originality of each entry, emphasizing the importance of personal creativity and artistic integrity. Collaboration with other artists or assistance from external sources is strictly prohibited, as the focus is on showcasing the unique talents and perspectives of each participating artist. This rule is designed to maintain a level playing field and to celebrate the individual artistic expression of each contestant.
The submission deadline is midnight January 31st, 2026, Pacific Standard Time, with winners to be announced around February 15th, 2026. Each division will have a grand prize winner for a total of 4 winners and there will also be fun honorable mentions. Prize to be announced at a later date and cannot be exchanged or credit given in it’s place.
